Rawlins WyomingRawlins is the county seat of Carbon County in south-central Wyoming. The Frontier Prison, the Carbon County Museum, the Historic Ferris Mansion, and Historic Downtown Rawlins are among the town's attractions. The town's economy benefits from the coal, uranium, natural gas, and other mining resources in the area. The population of Rawlins is 8,538 (2000 census).Rawlins was first given the name Rawlins Springs in 1867 when General John Rawlins, whose troops were protecting the railway survey crews in the area, discovered a spring. Later the name was shortened to Rawlins. The town was incorporated in 1886 and designated the county seat of Carbon County. elk.jpg Carbon County was named after the extensive coal deposits found there in the 1860's. When first established, the county stretched the entire width of Wyoming, but it was later reduced in size by the creation of other counties. The area was well-traversed as the western frontier expanded during the nineteenth century. The Overland Trail, the Oregon Trail, the Mormon Trail, and the original routes of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Lincoln Highway cut through Carbon County. Today, Rawlins is located on I-80, Wyoming's major east-west thoroughfare. The county boasts productive livestock ranches, abundant wildlife, beautiful fishing spots, active coal mines, and oil and gas fields. Sinclair Oil Refinery, one of the largest in the U.S., is located just east of Rawlins in Sinclair. Rawlins is the site of Wyoming's Frontier Prison (pictured). Built in 1898 from Carbon County limestone, the prison served as the state penitentiary for close to a century. The old penitentiary is now a historic monument that attracts tourists and those interested in the history of the Old West. The prison hosts a variety of activities and events with tours available from June through Labor Day weekend. Rawlins is also home to the Carbon County Museum, which houses a sizable collection of photographs and artifacts chronicling the life of the Old West; the Historic Ferris Mansion, a Queen Anne style Victorian mansion built by an early mining pioneer; and Historic Downtown Rawlins, rich in nineteenth century architecture rawlinspen.jpg From HomePage
